All Made Up is a series of portraits using make-up as a medium. My colour palette and medium are confined to the sitter’s own beauty collection: lipstick, mascara, tanning lotion, eyelash glue, nail polish all feature. The process, which was triggered by a desire to re-examine my values and beliefs is raising many fascinating questions e.g. themes surrounding animal testing, the environment, sitting very still, friendship, death, bereavement, masks, identity, feminism, femininity.
One of the most interesting topics that emerges is the etymology of make-up products. Red lipstick becomes “4 a.m. pout”. There are even products marketed at my daughter’s age group (7), with titles such as “Forever Pink” and “candy floss dreams”.
